- In January the National Congress promulgates a new constitution, substituting that of 1946. On March 15th, Marshal Costa e Silva takes over as president of Brazil. Elected indirectly by Congress, Costa e Silva is the choice of Castelo Branco, the previous president.

- At the Third TV Record Festival, Edu Lobo wins with “Ponteio”, but the star attractions are Caetano Veloso with “Alegria, alegria” (“Joy, joy”) and Gilberto Gil with “Domingo no parque” (“Sunday in the park”).

- The exhibition Nova Objetividade Brasileira (New Brazilian Objectivity) is held at Rio de Janeiro’s MAM (Modern Art Museum).

- The movie Terra em Transe (Entranced Earth), by Glauber Rocha, is released.
