– Violence increases during the period. On April 2nd, Martin Luther King begins his campaign for black civil rights in the US, which, despite its non-violent nature, results in the arrest of thousands of people taking part in protest marches.

– In November, the US grieves for President John F. Kennedy, assassinated by   a gunman while parading in an open car in Dallas, Texas. Shortly after the bullets are fired, police arrest Lee Harvey Oswald for the crime. Oswald himself is, however, shot dead before he can be brought to trial.
