– Communist China rises up: in April, Mao Tse-Tung sets off the “Cultural Revolution” aimed at purging all opponents holding any power within the Communist Party machine.  In artistic and educational institutions, new initiatives are put in practice to encourage “criticism of reactionary bourgeois thinking”.

– In the US, opposition to the Vietnam War increases. In May, university students and other demonstrators gathered on the lawns of the White House again protest against the war.
