On April 4th, the leader of the non-violent civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, is assassinated on the balcony of his room on the second floor of the Lorraine Motel, in Memphis, Tennessee. The death of Dr. King causes outrage among America’s black community, setting off a wave of conflict in various cities.

– The Prague Spring also occurs in April. Students celebrate moderate reforms carried out by the leader of the Communist Party, Alexander Dubcek, who believes in the possibility of reconciling Marxism with personal freedom.
