I had composed “Tropicália” shortily before O rei da vela premiered, and seeing this play was for me a revelation that there was indeed a movement afoot in Brazil, a movement that transcended popular music. In the program notes, Zé Celso dedicated the new production to Glauber and to Cinema Novo’s responsiveness to the reality of the times, a quality he found wanting in contemporary theater.
