Janis Joplin was the black white girl, the girl from our generation, who, In the United States synthesized freedom, adventure and rebellion. This was the United States of American fatally mestiza, fatally engaged, in all directions, with the nonwhites decimated or enslaved by colonization. She was also an exciting example of how a society of abundance, with its extremely high degree of competition, could produce artists who could combine the rough edge of the uncultivated with the most highly cultivated technical precision. We started watching the 1ight show around the fiberglass doll as the bulbs followed the sounds of Janis Joplin’s “Summertime.” The musical inconsistency of Big Brother and the Holding Company enhanced more than detracted from the beauty of that girl’s singing, which emerged like a nuclear force from the new world – of California college students, of Black Panthers radicalism, of opposition to the Vietnam War, and of show business suddenly transformed by neo-rock.
