As far as tropicalismo owes anything to my actions and ideas the catalyst of the movement may be found in my experience of Glauber Rocha’s Terra em Transe (Land in Anguish) Watching the film in Rio in 1966, my heart was pounding from the start; It opens with an aerial view of the ocean approaching the Brazilian coastline against a soundtrack of the same candomblé chanting heard in his first film, Barravento (The Turning Wind). As the film continued, one powerful Image after another confirmed my impression that unconscious aspects of our reality were on the verge of being revealed.
