January
– Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil return to Brazil. After a few shows in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, both go home to Bahia.
At Salvador’s carnival, the Trio Tapajós celebrates the return of the Tropicalists by playing in Praça Castro Alves, on the top of a truck called the “CAETANAVE” (“CAETANOSHIP”), the hits “Atrás do trio elétrico” (“Following the trio elétrico) and “Chuva, suor e cerveja” (“Rain, sweat and beer”), both by Caetano Veloso.
March
– Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil play together in a show at Rio de Janeiro’s Teatro Municipal (Opera House).
– The inspired record Transa is released, recorded by Caetano Veloso while still in exile, with Jards Macalé, Perinho Albuquerque and Tuti Moreno.

– Gilberto Gil releases Expresso 2222, a record marking his return from exile and the beginning of a new phase in his career.
November
– Torquato Neto commits suicide in his apartment in Rio de Janeiro. He was twenty-seven.
