- In January, Jânio Quadros is inaugurated the new president, but resigns in August after only six months in the job.

- On September 7th, Vice President João Goulart assumes the presidency. The next day, Congress approves a bill creating a parliamentary democracy, reducing the president’s powers. Tancredo Neves becomes Prime Minister of Brazil.

- The UNE – CPC (National Union of Students – Center for Popular Culture) is founded in Rio de Janeiro.
