– In January, Jânio Quadros is inaugurated the new president, but resigns in August after only six months in the job.

– On September 7^th, Vice President João Goulart assumes the presidency. The next day, Congress approves a bill creating a parliamentary democracy, reducing the president’s powers. Tancredo Neves becomes Prime Minister of Brazil.

– Antônio Carlos (Tom) Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes compose “The girl from Ipanema”.

– The UNE – CPC (National Union of Students – Center for Popular Culture) is founded in Rio de Janeiro.
